Lessons from Budget Decisions in Education

Just a lighthearted look at today’s budget, recalling the concrete steps up to the Porta-cabins.

What’s something you believe everyone should know.

My ears pricked up when the lady who told us our news for the next tax year – I forget her name – but she said “X amount for schools so that your children aren’t schooled in porta-cabins!!” Hmmm. I was schooled in a porta-cabins from Infants through to Seniors and why? Because of the Labour Government! The socialists of the 1970’s!! Remember them? The 3 day week – or the dark ages as I used to call them, was actually 1974, so the Conservatives, with the Miners strike over pay, there wasn’t enough coal or electricity!

Sir Anthony Eden Conservative 1955 to 1957

Harold McMillain Conservative 1957 to 1963

Sir Alec Douglas Home Conservative 1963 to 1964

Harold Wilson Labour 1964 to 1970

Sir Edward Heath Conservative 1970 to 1974

Harold Wilson Labour 1974 to 1976

James Callaghan Labour 1976 to 1979

Baroness Thatcher Conservative 1979 to 1990

John Major 1990 to 1997

Why did I need to list all these? To represent the time log when different things happened. Thatcher allowed people to buy their own council houses which was a fantastic idea, but we have since then never had enough houses to go around. You could blame Thatcher, or the growing populace on that one!And then you get onto my favourite argument about “Too many people!”

Any thoughts? Did you have a freezing cold classroom in a Porta-cabin in the 1970s/80s/90s?
